Since 1989 it has been a legal requirement that trailer brakes are auto-reverse.
What does this mean? The auto reverse mechanism, inside the brake, senses when your trailer is going backwards and overides the normal forward braking mechanism. One of the features of auto reversing brakes is that the handbrake mechanism must have an energy store fitted to ensure efficient braking when your trailer is at rest.
All trailer brakes MUST now be type approved by law. Trailer users often ask if it is legal to use car brakes on trailers. We advise that it is no longer legal to manufacture a new trailer using car brakes. In the past the handbrake mechanism on hydraulic brakes was used but this does not give the required braking efficiency for your trailer.
